Hello, I’m Suzie Gaffney, the new Camano Coordinator for Sound Water Stewards. It is a part-time position 10 hours per week. I joined the 2011 class on Camano and have been volunteering ever since.
My late husband was a fisheries biologist for the State of Alaska and we spent most of our ‘together free time’ outside climbing mountains, fishing for whatever was out there, and exploring every little pond that we could find. My biggest takeaway from this time was how much I really liked being outside.
Coming to Camano Island and living next door to two state parks reinforced those feelings and so, it was an easy decision to join Beach Watchers. I enjoyed my classes…the topics, the experts, and the class members.
Most of my volunteer time for the last 5 years has been with Beach Watchers, now Sound Water Stewards, doing everything from helping create the class play, to bio-monitoring, to working on committees, to developing educational opportunities for kids. I’ve also volunteered with Friends of Camano Island Parks (FOCIP), Cama Beach Foundation, and Island County Master Gardeners.
Although my original education involved dance and theater, I’ve spent 30+ years in public education working in Alaska, Italy, Oregon, and Japan…loved it all. I also really liked serving as the Executive Director for the Alaska Arts Education Association to develop Summer Arts Institutes for K-12 educators from all over Alaska.
I’m looking forward to being more involved with Sound Water Stewards as they continue the work started as Beach Watchers and as they move forward with new projects.
