On a Wing and a Prayer – Salish Seabird Migration

About the Class

10:50 AM - 11:50 AM - Morning Elective Class, 12:50 PM - 1:50 PM - Afternoon Elective Class
Speaker: Dr. Peter Hodum

The mighty whales, the hardy salmon, and flocks of diverse seabirds journey to the islands of the Salish Sea. Their interconnected migration patterns tell us about the importance of our marine ecosystem food web, which is part of the Pacific Flyway. Why do these birds come here, where are they going, and how can we protect them on their journey?  Although the Salish Sea hosts a community of breeding and wintering seabirds, relatively little is known about the ecology and conservation status of many of the species, particularly the burrow-nesters. Dr. Peter Hodum, with over 30 years of experience in the ecology and conservation of threatened birds, will be our guide in this migration, with a primary focus on seabirds and island ecosystems.
