Interesting Fact
Everyone can play a role in stewardship.
MISSION: Sound Water Stewards are trained volunteers working in and around Island County for a healthy, sustainable marine environment through education, science, and stewardship.
VISION: a healthy marine environment as defined by diverse natural ecosystems and sustainable human communities.
When you give at SCGive.org on Nov. 29, #GivingTuesday, your donation makes it possible for SWS to organize shoreline events to connect local people with local marine life, AND to share sustainability actions to preserve the marine environment.
People are curious about the whales, salmon and plankton in the Salish Sea that surrounds us. And, Sound Water Stewards are eager to share what we have learned …
At shoreline events, Stewards will create learning opportunities to connect people with local marine life on local beaches — and share sustainability actions to preserve the marine environment!
Species and processes to be highlighted:
- plankton, diatoms
- grey whales, ghost shrimp
- invasive green crabs, native shore crabs, Dungeness crabs
- marine birds, pigeon guillemots
- forage fish, eelgrass, bull kelp
- sea stars, sunflower stars
- clams, mussels
- northern giant hornets (so far our traps have found none)
- bluff erosion and beach processes
- native trees, shrubs and plants
We will give out a hand lens to all participants to take a closer look, plus a Junior Steward booklet for youth.
