April 9th, 2024 – 3 pm -Friday Harbor Researcher Dr. Deborah Giles joins Dive In with Liz and Sylvia to share her findings on Orca health. Dive in with Liz and Sylvia is a continuing series of Dr. Sylvia Earle and her daughter, Liz Taylor, with a special guest in each episode.

Did you know that volunteers from Sound Water Stewards help support Storm Water Monitoring with Friends of Skagit beaches? Our volunteers help collect stormwater samples from outfalls on North Whidbey to test for six attributes of pollution that comprise stormwater runoff.

This stormwater monitoring approach, funded in part by Orca recovery funds received through a grant from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, is designed to use monitoring techniques to identify stormwater pollution that may be harmful directly to Orca’s or to the food chain they depend on.

This Zoom, with a local research scientist from Friday Harbor, shares the flip side of the story. What is the current health of our orca population based on a novel non-invasive monitoring technique – monitoring whale feces.
