PFAS in Well Water on Camano and Whidbey

John Lovie of the Whidbey Water Systems Association, with support from an Ecology Public Participation Grant, will be leading two community meetings in June 2023.  Meetings will include a panel discussion with representatives from multiple local or state agencies, including Ecology and Dept of Heal (DOH).

The schedule for both meetings will include an Introduction to PFAS session from 5-5:30 pm, a short break, and then the Listening and Collaboration session from 6-8 pm.

Meeting dates and locations:  

June 22 on Whidbey at the Coupeville Rec Hall (901 NW Alexander St, Coupeville, WA)

June 23 on Camano at the Island County Multi-Purpose Room (141 N E Camano Dr, Camano, WA – near pickleball courts just south of CASA animal shelter — google maps is unreliable in finding this building)

PFAS stands per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, a large family of related man-made chemicals.  PFAS don’t break down naturally in the environment and can move with precipitation like rain down through soil and into the groundwater that we use for drinking water.  PFAS have been around since the 1940s and are used in lots of products because they have some unique and useful chemical properties.  Unfortunately, we now know that some PFAS are toxic to laboratory animals and have the potential to impact people’s health.  You can learn more about PFAS health concerns at doh.wa.gov/pfas.
