Trip Description: Since 1975, mussels have been farmed at Penn Cove, and today this operation is America’s oldest and largest commercial mussel farm. Join Tim Jones, operations manager, for an informative and engaging mussel raft tours to learn why the geographic and hydrological features at this site are ideal for raising mussels, to see the 64-foot custom mussel harvesting vessel and crew at work, and understand why mussel farming provides enhanced habitat and ecosystem services for many species and contributes to the overall health of the marine environment.
This Field Trip for Class of 2023 is a treat! You get to take a boat ride out to the commercial mussel floats and learn directly from Tim Jones of Penn Cove Shellfish
24 is the maximum number of people in each boat. You will be asked to complete a liability waiver when you arrive.

Site: Boat loads from the dock at Coupeville Wharf. Park your car in downtown Coupeville.
Driving Directions: GTWE page 55 – Coupeville Wharf
From Hwy 20, turn N onto Main Street; turn W onto Coveland Street; in two blocks, turn N onto Alexander Street; go one block to the wharf. Walk 500 feet on the wharf walkway, just before the doorway, turn right and go down the ramp to the boat dock from where the Penn Cove vessel will embark. You will see familiar Stewards waiting for your arrival. You will need to sign a waiver and release before you board the vessel. Stewards will have these available for your signature.
Public restrooms are in the Wharf building and along Alexander Street next to the Visitor Information Center.
Parking: Parking is available along adjoining streets, and in the town uphill of the wharf on Alexander Street, near the Library. Essentially, park where you can legally leave your vehicle for a few hours.
Please dress for being on a vessel in September – layers of clothing, rain gear if necessary, and sensible footwear.
