The Guides:

Marianne Elliott and Michael Yadrick are co-presenting a virtual class during the Feb 4 Sound Waters University AND offering two field trips on Feb 11.

  • Marianne Elliott is a Research Associate in Plant Pathology at Washington State University, Puyallup Research & Extension Center and co-founder of ArbutusARME.  She researches disease management for woody plants in nurseries, landscapes, and forests. 
  • Michael Yadrick is a Plant Ecologist with Seattle Parks and Recreation and he works for the Green Seattle Partnership team. Michael has worked with several land trusts before returning home to Seattle. Michael currently supports professional crew work happening across GSP sites.

The Field Trip (only for Sound Waters University registrants; requires event + field trip ticket):

Pacific Madrone by Dan Hale, SWS Class of 2022, at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island.

Learn about the ecology and range of Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii), its pollinators and wildlife associations, and health concerns such as diseases and climate change.

Before you go: Consider installing iNaturalist and/or TreeSnap apps to your mobile device and learn to take pictures and upload reports to assist in ongoing data collection.

Location: Camano Island State Park (CISP) bluff trail. More details will be sent in advance to those with tickets for this trip. The trail is a true forest and bluff trail. Hiking stick and boots preferred.
