Mussel Depoylment On Whidbey

Mussel Bagging Shifts have been completed! Thank you to our 52 volunteers who assisted bagging over 10,000 mussels for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Next Steps: Cage Deployment at Night :

  • If you are interested in volunteering for a cage deployment between November 12-18th “SignUp Here
  • We need 3 more volunteers for the North Whidbey Forbes Point site.
  • All Mussels will be deployed in cages across the Salish Sea.

Sunday, November 12th – Saturday, November 18, 2023 

Forbes Point will most likely be between Monday-Friday

Volunteer | Deployment team:

  • 1st: Fill out a WDFW volunteer profile here if you have never done so.
  • 2nd: Click “SignUp Herechoose which day works best for you for the Forbes Point locations
  • 3rd: Log in your VolunteerMatters profile to record your hours. Details below.

Night Time Deployment

  • Zero foot tidal height ideal for deployment.
  • The earlier the week, the earlier the meet time
  • See Deployment protocol below


  • Held at Penn Cove Mussel Farm which has no parking
  • Volunteers must park at the Coupeville Library and meet a transit van for your shift.

What to expect:

  • Outdoors at night
  • Dress for the weather as it usually rains this time of year
  • Wear waterproof washable boots and warm socks
  • Read the Deployment Protocol for success

  • Receive Reminder Emails, plus receive credit for your hours automatically after your shift has ended!

The bagged mussels are subsequently distributed to nearly 100 sites across the Puget Sound region and used as part of the stormwater action monitoring.
