Meet the Pinnipeds of the Salish Sea

April 22 @ 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Have you ever strolled the beach and come across a baby seal crying for its’ mother, or a big log that suddenly snorted? Meet the Pinnipeds (Seals and Sea lions) of Whidbey Island and the Salish Sea – their behaviors, stories and how to safely coexist.

Come join us for an engaging presentation learning about the fascinating lives and local stories of the four species of seals and sea lions that frequent the shores of Whidbey Island and the Salish Sea, and what to do when you encounter any of the amazing mammals. Presenter Garry Heinrich is the Response Coordinator for the Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network (CPSMMSN), based on Whidbey Island, and works with dedicated volunteers to respond to any injured, stranded, or deceased marine mammal when found on our beaches.

CPSMMSN is a partnership between Orca Network, wildlife veterinarians and biologists, and NOAA Fisheries Scientists, with trained staff and volunteers. They respond to dead and live strandings of marine mammals on the beaches of Island County, the northern part of Snohomish County and most of Skagit County. Sound Water Stewards (SWS) partners with Orca Network for many events and projects, including assistance with marine mammal stranding when necessary. To learn more about SWS’s involvement with CPSMMSN, visit the Marine Mammal Stranding project page via this link: SWS Marine Mammal Stranding Project Page

This presentation is free through the Coupeville Library with no pre-registration required. We hope to see you there!
