On February 6, 2027, Sound Waters University’s theme is Shore to Seafloor: Celebrating The Beauty and Biodiversity of the Salish Sea
Sound Waters University (SWU) is a One-day University for All. It is designed by Sound Water Stewards members to educate the public at large as they educate their fellow members and participants in their projects throughout the year. A theme for the University is established, and speakers who are experts in their fields of environmental science are invited to create a 60-minute presentation on their particular area of expertise to support that theme. This year, the theme is “Shore to Seafloor: Celebrating The Beauty and Biodiversity of the Salish Sea.”
Current research unveils the importance a sense of place plays in the connection we all feel when we spend time in a region we embrace. The regions along the shore and on the waterways of the Salish Sea are no exception. A strong sense of place empowers individuals, communities, and decision-makers to understand their surroundings. If they understand their region, they’ll appreciate it all the more. If they appreciate it, they’ll want to protect it and make place-dependent decisions to that end. This translates to the Salish Sea ecosystems so they’re not only sustained but will flourish into the future.
