From Landfill to Local Treasure- Food Waste in Island County. David Haskell vividly shows what happens to Whidbey’s garbage on its way to enormous Roosevelt Landfill in southern Washington. He describes the immense environmental, energetic, and financial costs of these journeys to transport Island County waste hundreds of miles each day. And also describes what happens to our trash once it is IN the landfill. Camano/Stanwood waste also travels to Roosevelt, via a similar route, which Scott Chase will describe.

Learn how we can greatly reduce the volume we send to the landfill when you hear David explain that 40% of our garbage is food waste, which need not be shipped away. David challenges us to find solutions including discussing how organic waste could be redirected to local use, a “treasure”, feeding our soil, and nourishing our Island food chains.

David W. Haskell is a sustainability professional with 30 years experience, including serving as New Zealand’s Director of the Ministry of Energy’s Conservation and Renewable Energy Division, CEO of New Zealand’s largest post-consumer plastic recycling company, owner and manager of Solar Specialities Ltd., subsequently environmentally-active in Marin County, and now, as a resident of Whidbey.

While working in New Zealand, he was even rewarded personally by the Queen for his service to the country!

[His] presentation, was truly a “knock your socks off” event for many of us who were there!
