PaulBen McElwain (W)

PaulBen-McElwain-2023

Board Term 2023

former SWS President (2019), Class of 2017

After growing up running loose in the fields, woods, and lakes of the East and South, PaulBen (Paul + Benjamin, to distinguish from Grandfather Paul) crossed over to Seattle in 1965 for the UW program in Physical Oceanography.  One rainy winter morning looking out the dorm window, a tingling sensation told him that he had found his true home, the Pacific NorthEast.

After some academic time out PaulBen returned to the UW to complete studies in Geology, focusing on geomorphic hydrology, and Geography in computer cartography.  A career followed in computing at UW and Boeing. When his spouse, Jeanie, completed SWS VET training in 2003, PaulBen became a SWS tag-along spouse.

After returning from eight years in Indiana and getting retired, PaulBen completed his own VET training in 2017. And the rest, as they say, is history — with a focus on nearshore geomorphic processes, intertidal monitoring, seaweeds, and information technology (along with obsessing over organizational process and obscure documentation).
