Why do you want to become a Sound Water Steward?

The work that we do is incredibly important, and I feel spreading not only awareness, but providing the tools to make a difference in the conservation of our local beaches and coastlines are the key to ensuring these places last for generations to come. I have felt extremely privileged to have visited a variety of unique ecosystems and environments, which gives me a deep appreciation for Island County and the folks who have stepped up to study it. Between gathering information on what is currently happening, maintaining its history, and striving to inform others of what they can do to be better members of their local habitats, there is a lot of good things that SWS brings to bear on the intimidating, sometimes overwhelming presence of climate change.

Have you participated in community science, stewardship, and/or education programs before? What were those experiences like?

I have previously enjoyed invasive species removal projects, kokanee fry trapping on Lake Sammamish, stream analysis projects, and conducting spawning surveys with Skagit Fisheries Enhancement group. While my experience has primarily been on inland watersheds, I see the great importance of a healthy habitat for all of salmon’s life stages, and look forward to finding ways to help preserve estuaries and near-shore habitats for young smolts and returning adults.

Please tell us about your work and volunteer experience, special skills or hobbies, and any other details you would like us to know about you.

I have had extensive customer service training and have historically worked with people in a wide variety of backgrounds, personal circumstances, and abilities. I also deeply enjoy artistic creation and love learning new skills of all kinds, from metal working to pressing flowers. I previously presided over a homebrewing group as the Vice President and often took the lead on projects during my time in college, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Educational Background

I have an associate’s degree in Funeral Service Education and received my Bachelor’s degree in Applied Computing with a minor in Data Visualization and Environmental Studies.
