Please describe why you want to become a Sound Water Steward?

I love the ocean, this island, and am committed to conservation of resources.

Tell us a little about your experience in community science, stewardship, and/or education programs

I work as a psychiatric nurse practitioner which, for most of my career, was in community mental health clinics. The most important part of my job was education of patients/clients. When people have in-depth knowledge of the medications and supplements I am proposing, they are better able to make informed decisions in their care and are more committed.
I volunteered in earlier decades at humane societies, rescues, and an aquarium in my hometown.

Please tell us a little about your work and volunteer experience, special skills, or other details you wish to share

I worked in pediatric ophthalmology research. I had a 15-year career as a science writer and editor in California. I enjoy educating people in the context of my work. I am well versed in evidenced-based medical practice. As aforementioned, my volunteer experience is mostly in animal rescues. As a volunteer at the Niagara Falls aquarium in my early 20s, I swam with a needle-nosed dolphin. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life., but bittersweet to see him confined to a small pool.
