2. What is Sound Waters?

Sound Waters is a one day conference, or "university for all", held annually on the first Saturday in February. The first Sound Waters was in the early 1990's and was a small gathering.  This is our 23rd event, and we expect well over 600 people.  The keynote begins the day, and is followed by three sessions featuring a choice of 60 classes, plus an exhibits hall that runs all day.

No prior knowledge is required - just an interest in learning about and taking care of this amazing place where we live.

3. When, Where is Sound Waters University 2017 ?
  • Saturday, February 4, 2017 - opens at 8, Keynote at 9, last class ends at 4:15. See Schedule for details.
  • South Whidbey High School, Langley, WA -  See Directions page for a map, and information on various transportation options.
4. What does it cost?

Normal registration is $50.00

4H will provide yummy baked goods during morning and afternoon breaks (donations gratefully accepted)

An optional catered lunch (see menu) is available for an additional $14.00, and must be ordered when registering for classes.

You are, of course, welcome to bring your own brown-bag lunch. (But please help us by using reusable or compostable containers; and please pack out all your non-compostable garbage.)

6. Where can I stay ?

See our Where to Stay page.

7. Who are Sound Water Stewards

We are trained volunteers working in and around Island County for a healthy, sustainable Puget Sound environment through education, community outreach, stewardship, and citizen science.

From 1990 through 2015 we were a program under WSU Island County Extension, and were known as WSU Island County Beach Watchers.  Beginning Jan 1, 2016 we are our own independent organization.

The annual Sound Waters one-day university is our largest educational/outreach activity - from the late spring kickoff to the March post-mortem - the team puts in over 3000 hours of volunteer time.

If you find the course offerings at Sound Waters interesting, consider joining our organization - classes begin each spring - and more information will become available on our website in the new year.

Class Choices
14. What do the stars and triangle icons mean ?

Class icons
- this class is new in SW.2017
- this is a returning class
- unmarked class
- you've marked it as a favorite class [-?-]

Presenter icons
- presenter is new in SW.2017
- returning presenter

15. Can I mark interesting classes as favorites (or wishlist or ...)

Yes.  On most lines showing the title of a class, you will see a star image to the far left.  If you see an empty star, click on it, and the class will now be in your 'favorites' or 'wishlist'.

All of the Sessions pages allow you to pick among viewing (1) all classes, (2) just those you've marked as favorites, or (3) those you have not marked.

You can mark favorites on our pages showing class summaries, or on class full descriptions.

You can remove a class from your wishlist by clicking on its gold star to turn it back to an unmarked (empty) star.

Your wishlist is stored as a cookie in your browser, so cannot be shared across browsers.

When registration opens, the registration form will highlight your starred classes and you can specify their ranking order.

16. I'm new to Sound Waters - how do I choose?

Except for classes specifically desccribed as Intermediate, all classes are suitable for someone new to the topic.

Try the 'something old, something new' approach - classes marked with gray stars have been given at previous Sound Waters - classes marked with green triangles are new material, sometimes by returning presenters.

17. Are there new classes this year?

More than two thirds of our classes are new this year (look for green triangle marker)

The Program Chair works hard to ensure that we have a mix of new and old topics - we hope you enjoy them.

Registration
18. When and how do I register?

Registration for SW.2017 is now closed
  • A limited number of walkin registrations will be available on Feb 4th for $10 above the normal registration fee.
  • You can review which classes still have space on this information for potential walkins page and facilitate the process Saturday morning by entering your preferences online.

While registration is open you can:

  • register online by clicking on the Registration link on the left side of this or any other Sound Waters University 2017 web page.
  • download a paper application from the Downloads page, and mail it to us via US mail.

We strongly prefer you register online.  You can do so and still mail us a check for your payment.

19. How do I tell you my preferred classes?

For each class session (A, B, C) we ask that you ...

  • pick 3-5 classes for any session where you plan to attend classes.  It helps us understand what topics people are interested in, and makes it easier to ensure that everyone will get into a class that they are really interested in.

How do I do that ??

For each session (A, B, C) you will see a list of all of the classes in that session.

  • If you have previously marked 'Favorite' classes, they will be marked with a gold star.
  • There is space for a ranking number to the left of each class. A copy of all classes that you have ranked (with a number from 1 to 4) will appear in your preferences section at the top of the page.
  • If there are several classes that you like equally, you can give them all the same ranking number. This helps us in balancing people to their preferred classes.

See next:  How does Sound Waters University 2017 use our preferences to assign classes

20. How does Sound Waters University 2017 use my preferences
  • The computer algorithm that assigns people to classes will balance the assignments to maximize the number of people getting one of the classes they ranked as 1.  People are always assigned to classes in the order in which they registered, and based on their chosen rankings.
  • If a preferred class is already at maximum capacity, you will be added to a waiting list, and assigned to the next available class per your rankings.
  • We juggle classes between rooms up until a few days before the conference, in order to ensure that as many people as possible get their first choice class.  (Only exception is where a presenter has requested a limited attendance)
  • We will send out an email to each registered participant on Thursday afternoon, February 5th, with your confirmed class assignments.
21. How do I pay?

If you register online, you have the option to

  • mail us a check,
  • pay by credit card (via paypal),
  • pay from your paypal account.

If you mail in a paper application, you must pay by check, made out to Sound Water Stewards.

22. The registration pages aren't working on my computer ...

You may download a paper registration form from the Downloads link on the left side of this page.  Print it, fill it out, and mail it along with your check to the address on the form.

Please include a note (or email us at swu@soundwaterstewards.org) with the following information:

  • what kind of computer (e.g., Windows-##, Mac,  Ipad or tablet, smart phone) you have,
  • what browser you are using (e.g., chrome, safari, firefox, internet explorer, opera, ...)

We regret the inconvenience, but we are not able to test on every vintage of computer and browser.

23. I was partway through my registration yesterday, but today I get an empty form.

Your registration information is still in our database.
Click on the Find My Reg.... link on the left side of this or any SW page and follow the instructions to retrieve your partially completed form.

24. I registered online but never got the confirmation email - how long should I wait?

The confirmation email is sent immediately, so should arrive in your inbox within a minute.

It is sent  from swu@soundwaterstewards.org (via sendgrid.info)

Please ensure that your mail account spam filters do not reject such emails. If you have done this and still do not receive a confirmation, send us an email at swu@soundwaterstewards.org and someone will get back with you.  Be sure to include your name and phone number.

25. I need to change something on my registration.

We do not support changes to registration once you have paid (or committed to do so).
For special cases, you may contact us (email is preferable, but remember that we are all volunteers, so it may take a while to get back to you).

26. I need to cancel my registration.

Please contact us immediately so that we can make your class slots available to other registrants.

To be eligible for a refund,
you MUST contact us
by Sunday, Jan 29, 6pm

We regret that we cannot give refunds for cancellations beyond that date.

Refunds will be made in mid to late February (when our volunteers have a chance to breathe again!)
